ClosedLess
As in less closed, not always open.
About ClosedLess – Who Are We?
ClosedLess is a small community of like-minded developers. We dedicate our skills to improving the accessibility and acceptance of open-source software.
In that regard we have similar views to the FSF, but we differ in some areas as well. We believe that a user should have free choice of what they run on their system – even non-free, proprietary, closed-source software.
We also have views that align with the suckless community, mainly that software should be simple and easy to maintain, but where suckless believe that the source code should be all the documentation you need, we would prefer to have added documentation alongside the source code.
We also believe in the liberal use of appropriate comments.
The History of ClosedLess
ClosedLess was started in August 2021 with two friends (our founding members) who decided that aside from projects they were both working on they would start an organisation.
This initially started out more as a joke than a serious plan. However the idea came up a few more times, and eventually things became serious. The first thing to be made was the name, combining the simplicity of the suckless name with our views.
Next came the manifesto which saw multiple revisions and small tweaks before it was ready to be published. Many hours were spent tweaking it until the right level of clarity and informality was reached.
The ClosedLess Secret
There is one big unwritten rule in ClosedLess, and that is to keep it light but professional. We like to joke, but even in our humour there is space for intelligent and educational content.
